Trump emphasized that the offer to send the military “means a lot to him.”
According to bb.lv, the Lithuanian State Defense Council decided in May to send up to 40 servicemen and specialists to the Strait of Hormuz to participate in demining operations.
The issue is currently under urgent consideration in the Seimas.
According to Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas, the Lithuanian military could join both a multinational mission led by Great Britain and France and an international operation under the auspices of the United States.
The letter also notes that Lithuania has always been a reliable friend and partner of the United States, and the willingness to provide access and permanent basing to the U.S. military reaffirms the unbreakable bond between the two countries.
The letter was received by the presidential administration this week, after the completion of the rotation of U.S. troops in Lithuania.
On Tuesday, Kaunas said it had received assurances from the U.S. that the U.S. military personnel completing the rotation would be replaced by new ones, but the timing is still unknown.
