Karl Schmidt, born on June 25, 1846, in Bălți, headed the city administration for a quarter of a century—from 1877 to 1903—and is considered the capital’s most successful mayor.
City Hall reports that the program for Thursday, June 25, includes commemorative events and discussions on history. A wreath-laying ceremony at the bust of the former mayor, located in front of the Sergei Lunkevich National Philharmonic, is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
At 10:00 a.m., an academic conference dedicated to the life, reforms, and legacy of Karl Schmidt will take place in the Round Hall of City Hall.
In addition, City Hall is organizing a series of walking tours of the capital’s historic center on June 25 and 27. Participants will visit streets and buildings that appeared during Schmidt’s tenure, when the city was connected to the water and electricity grids and the network of educational institutions was expanded.
The tours are scheduled for June 25 and 27. They are free of charge. The Romanian-language tour begins at 6:00 p.m., and the Russian-language tour begins at 6:30 p.m.
The meeting place for all participants is in front of the Philharmonic, at the intersection of Mihai Eminescu Street and Metropolitan Varlaam Street.
