The head of state noted that, despite variations in the size of Moldovan communities across European countries, members of the Moldovan diaspora live in all European Union member states and can help promote a positive image of the country.
“By the end of this year, we need to prepare a plan for each EU member state so that over the next two to three years, by 2030—when we expect to complete our preparations for accession— we can actively promote the Republic of Moldova and ensure that no one has any questions or misunderstandings about who Moldovans are and why the Republic of Moldova deserves to become part of the European Union,” — said Maia Sandu at the Diaspora Forum 2026, held under the motto “Wherever we are, Moldova unites us!”
As an example, Maia Sandu cited Albania, which has managed to significantly strengthen its international image through the consistent implementation of a communication strategy and the promotion of the country.
“Of course, Albania has been a candidate country for many years. However, if you’ve been following developments, you know that public opinion in a number of countries has not always supported its accession to the European Union. Nevertheless, in just a few years, Albania has managed to implement effective plans to promote the country, thanks to which many more people have come to know about it—in part through the development and promotion of tourism. “This is precisely what we should focus on: developing such a plan and implementing it in every EU member state in collaboration with embassies, the diaspora, and cultural institutions of the Republic of Moldova,” emphasized Maia Sandu.
The president also noted that the Republic of Moldova is already technically ready to open negotiations on all chapters of the accession process with the European Union, and expressed hope that the relevant decisions by EU member states and European institutions will be adopted in the coming months.
