CNN reports this.
Fifty senators voted in favor of the resolution, while 48 voted against it. Democrats had spent several weeks trying to secure Republican support for this vote, which caused considerable irritation at the White House.
Since the document is a so-called conciliatory resolution, it does not require the president’s signature and does not formally have the force of law. At the same time, Democrats in the House of Representatives believe the resolution is binding.
Representatives of the Trump administration called the vote inconsequential and attributed its success solely to the absence of some Republicans during the session.
The White House also stated that “there are no hostilities from which U.S. troops could be withdrawn, as hostilities ended with the ceasefire on April 7.”
Trump himself criticized the Senate’s standing resolution, which called for an end to the war with Iran.
“So, I have Iran on its knees, ready to fall and surrender, ready to give us almost everything, and for the first time in decades, it has immense respect for the United States and its president—me. The U.S. Senate decides to hold a senseless and untimely vote on the ‘Authorization for the Use of Military Force’ to tell the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism that the United States doesn’t like what I’m doing to them, and that I should stop. “In doing so, they have simply provided aid and support to the enemy,” Trump said.
