At that time, local authorities decided to close the landfill, which posed a threat to both Chișinău and Bubuiechi, and to restore the land to its original condition. What once threatened the municipality with an environmental disaster is now gradually being transformed into a waste treatment center that meets European standards.
The work is being carried out as part of the “Chisinau Solid Waste” project. To date, the landfill has been completely redesigned, covered with special membranes and layers of soil, and systems for collecting leachate and gas, as well as a stormwater management network, have been constructed.
Work is currently underway to construct an inspection road, followed by the installation of fencing to ensure the site’s security. The delivery and installation of equipment for burning the biogas generated at the landfill are scheduled for mid-July.
The work is part of the second phase of the municipal project “Chisinau Solid Waste,” with a total cost of approximately 26 million euros. It is being implemented by the Chisinau City Hall, the EBRD, the EIB, and E5P, and represents one of the largest investments made in recent years by the Chisinau City Hall to modernize the waste management system.
