Rural residents are moving to the cities

In Moldova, internal migration is actively underway. Rural residents are moving to cities, causing many small villages to become depopulated and lose their demographic potential. In 2025, internal migration led to an increase of 5,1 thousand people in the population of urban areas, at the expense of rural areas.

The data is provided by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The largest number of internal migrants headed for major cities. More than a third of all citizens who change their place of residence choose the capital. Specifically, 37.7% of the total number of arrivals were in the Chisinau municipality. It is followed by the Balti municipality (4.6%), the Orhei district (4.2%), and the Ialoveni district (3.7%).

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), approximately 27,500 people officially changed their place of residence within the country during 2025. This official figure far exceeds the data from 2024. In 2024, approximately 17,200 people officially changed their place of residence within the country.

Internal migrants are primarily people of working age (66.2%). The 15–34 age group is the most prevalent (41.1%). In terms of gender composition, the migration flow consisted of 52.5% women and 47.5% men.

There is also a reverse trend—every year, between 5,000 and 7,000 people make the return trip. As a rule, these are retirees returning to their hometowns or young professionals who are developing agribusiness in the regions or traveling to work under a job assignment program.
