arrest of fraudsters

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, on the night of 5 March 2025, the man, together with other as yet unidentified members of the group, took part in a scheme to defraud elderly people. The fraudsters called potential victims and told them that a relative of theirs had allegedly caused a road traffic accident. To resolve the resulting problems, they demanded that money be transferred urgently.

One of the victims was an 81-year-old woman from Fălești. She received a call from a man who introduced himself as a colonel in the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He told her that her niece had been involved in an accident in which several people had been injured, and that a certain sum of money needed to be paid to avoid legal consequences.

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the man received 51,000 lei, 3,050 euros and $50. The total loss amounted to over 100,000 lei.

The investigation also established that, during the same period, similar calls were made to several elderly residents of the Fălești and Florești districts. However, they recognised the scam and did not hand over any money.

The accused faces up to eight years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to 450,000 lei. The investigation into other alleged members of the group is ongoing.
