Opinion: Reintegration in Europe was achieved through dialog

The Transnistrian issue can be solved only through dialog and a realistic approach, and the lack of communication can generate even more distrust between the two banks of the Nistru River.

This is how the chairman of the “Alliance of Moldovans” party, Dumitru Roibu, commented on the lack of dialog between the authorities of Chisinau and the administration of Tiraspol on the air of a national TV channel.

He recalled that all the examples of peaceful reintegration known in Europe were built on dialog and constant communication between the parties.

It is difficult to talk about reintegrationwithout dialog

“The processes of reintegration or disintegration, which peacefully took place in Europe, were always carried out through dialog, not monologue and not by imposing one’s own position,” the politician noted. – When there is no dialog, it is difficult to talk about reintegration. We have seen examples in Europe when states have peacefully separated or avoided conflicts precisely due to communication and constant contacts.

At the same time, he noted that in recent years the authorities in Chisinau have almost completely reduced direct contacts with the Transnistrian side.

“The question is simple: if reintegration is a priority, why have so many years been lost without dialog and real meetings with the Transnistrian side?” he said. – Dumitru Roibu asked the question. -We had periods when there were direct contacts between the leaders on the two banks. Filat met with Shevchuk, Voronin – with Smirnov, Dodon – with Krasnoselsky. It is possible that some people had different opinions about this, but the dialog was maintained and it mattered”.

He emphasized that dialogue is also necessary at the international level, and gave the example of leaders of major states who maintain contacts even in times of crisis.

“Whether we like it or not, major powers communicate with each other even in tense situations,” the politician noted. – Macron negotiates with Moscow, Trump meets with Putin, their representatives maintain constant contacts. All of them are trying to establish the rules of coexistence and avoid escalation of conflicts. Then why do we think that the Transnistrian issue can be solved without dialog?”.
