This is the view expressed by Dumitru Roibu, chairman of the “Alliance of Moldovans” party.
According to the politician, recent events confirm that linking Moldova’s European course to that of Ukraine was a strategic mistake.
Without clear guarantees
“Moldovan diplomacy agreed to this approach without receiving clear guarantees that its interests would be considered separately and that our country would not become a hostage to geopolitical circumstances beyond its control,” he said.
Dumitru Roibu emphasized that Moldova has taken numerous steps to align itself with the European Union and that an assessment of its progress should be based solely on its own achievements.
“Moldova has made numerous concessions, carried out complex reforms, incurred significant economic and social costs, and made serious efforts to move closer to the European Union. However, today we are being indirectly led to believe that our European future may depend on developments in Ukraine. Such a situation is unacceptable for a sovereign and independent state,” he stated.
“Moldova’s foreign policy must be based on advancing the national interests of its citizens, not on subordinating them to external processes. And its efforts toward European integration should be evaluated based on Moldova’s own results, not depending on the military, political, or diplomatic situation in other countries,” noted Dumitru Roibu.
According to him, the emergence of discussions about alternative forms of integration raises doubts about the transparency of the messages conveyed to citizens.
