“Hungary’s answer is expected on Ukraine’s accession, which is somewhat related to Moldova. We will get an answer by the end of June on Moldova’s issue and hopefully it will be positive, in the sense that Moldova will officially start the accession process with the first cluster – on fundamental democratic issues,” Nikusor Dan said after attending the European Political Community summit in Yerevan.
The Romanian president expects Hungary to “clarify” its position on Ukraine’s EU accession process, which is linked to Moldova’s accession process.
“Of course, there is this connection between Moldova’s accession process and Ukraine’s accession process. Ukraine’s accession process is very sensitive. There was a Hungarian position that we see. We expect it to be clarified. It depends on two things: on the Hungary-Ukraine bilateral negotiations on the Hungarian community in Ukraine and on the negotiations between Hungary and the European Union on European funds, some of which have been blocked by the Union. But the answer will be very soon and I hope it will be positive,” the Romanian president said.
He said that the projects and means of the preparatory period of EU accession implemented by Moldova “are going very well”, but “the key issue is the actual, formal start of the accession process with the opening of the first chapter”.
