Romanian automakers Dacia and Ford have suspended production

Romania's interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan announced that automaker Automobile Dacia (a subsidiary of Renault) and the Turkish company Ford Otosan have suspended production at their local plants until August 19 in order to reduce electricity consumption, as the country is facing a severe power shortage due to historically low water levels in the Danube.

The decision by the two automakers will reduce energy consumption by approximately 200 MW, Bolojan said at a press conference. “Several other companies will also adopt similar measures to achieve voluntary reductions in energy consumption during the evening hours,” he added.

However, local news outlets Economica.net and Economedia.ro reported that the production shutdown at the Dacia plant in the southern city of Măgurele, Argeș County, and at the Ford Otosan plant in the southwestern city of Craiova, Dolj County, had been planned in advance for maintenance, as both companies typically do every August.
