More than 98% of Transnistria’s residents hold Moldovan citizenship

According to data from the State Population Registry, as of June 30, 2026, 366,830 people lived in the settlements on the left bank of the Dniester and in the Bender Municipality, of whom 359,867 are citizens of the Republic of Moldova.

A report from the Bureau for Reintegration emphasizes that, of the total number of registered individuals, 301,032 hold identity documents for domestic use, while 339,114 hold passports of the Republic of Moldova.

At the same time, data on 6,963 foreign citizens have been entered into the State Population Register, including individuals with permanent and temporary residence permits, stateless persons, refugees, and individuals who have received humanitarian assistance.

In the first half of 2026, residents of the left bank of the Dniester and the Bender municipality continued to take advantage of the benefits provided by law regarding the issuance of identity documents issued by the authorities of the Republic of Moldova.

Between January 1 and June 30, 2026, 7,404 people used services for obtaining identity cards, and an additional 43 people used services for obtaining temporary identity cards.

During the same period in 2025, 1,419 people used services for obtaining identity cards, 116 people obtained identity cards, and 149 people obtained either temporary identity cards or identity cards.
