To date, the country’s legislature has the highest rate of women’s representation in its history: 41 women serve in the Chisinau parliament. This figure significantly exceeds the global average, according to which women will account for only 27.5% of all parliamentarians by 2026.
The Platform of Women Members of the 12th Parliament of the Republic of Moldova plays a key role in consolidating this progress. Established with the support of UN Women Moldova, the platform serves as a space for interaction and dialogue, promoting women’s political leadership and the development of gender-sensitive public policies. The organization emphasizes that inclusive and representative parliaments are of paramount importance for building a democratic society that meets the needs of all citizens.
“Behind these figures lies a reality: many women involved in politics in Moldova continue to face harassment, offensive remarks, exclusion from decision-making processes, or unequal access to resources, which hinders the fulfillment of their mandate. To ensure women’s full and equal participation, parliaments must lead by example by implementing effective mechanisms to prevent and combat sexual harassment, discrimination, and violence,” notes a statement from UN Women Moldova.
Parliamentary Day: Lawmakers and Students Join Forces
To mark International Day of Parliamentarism, observed on June 30, an educational competition titled “Mission of Parliament” was held in the legislative body’s plenary hall. The event brought together lawmakers and students from Moldova State University (MoldSU) in mixed teams. They tested their knowledge of democracy and European integration and developed slogans for the “European Moldova 2030” National Development Strategy.
This initiative was organized in partnership with the Moldovan Intellectual Games Association (IQ Games) and the European Parliament’s Office for Relations with the Eastern Partnership Countries. As the grand prize, the winning team received an invitation to attend the next plenary session of the Parliament.
