This was stated by Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi. According to him, due to limited financial resources, Moldova is not yet able to open separate embassies in countries on the African continent and in Latin America.
“We don’t have the resources to open embassies in Kenya or Nigeria, but we’ve taken an intermediate step—we will soon have an ambassador for the African continent. He will be based in Chisinau, since we do not have a diplomatic mission in Africa, but he will travel several times a year to Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa—wherever it is necessary and where opportunities arise,” Popșoi stated.
According to the minister, a similar approach will be applied to Latin America.
“It’s far away, and there are few of our citizens there, but no matter how many there are, we need to help them. The economic opportunities are significant, and we need to take advantage of them. We will have an ambassador with non-resident accreditation for Latin America, based in Chisinau,” said the foreign minister.
The minister also reported on the development of relations with Central Asian countries.
“All of Central Asia was previously unrepresented by the Republic of Moldova. There are opportunities with the Central Asian countries of the former Soviet Union, with which we have established certain relations. Previously, there were no relations; now there are,” the minister noted.
In addition, the foreign minister emphasized the need to further expand the consular network in Europe, where a significant portion of the Moldovan diaspora resides. According to him, the authorities would like to open more consulates, but this depends on available budgetary resources, and the Ministry of Finance does not always support such initiatives.
