The target was detected at 4:44 a.m., 24 kilometers north of the city of Galați, Miruța said in a social media post cited by Euronews .
The drone, whose origin has not been confirmed by Romanian authorities, was intercepted and destroyed between the towns of Baleni and Codalbi in the southeastern part of the country, in an area adjacent to the border with Moldova. The incident occurred amid yet another night of exchanges of fire between Russia and Ukraine.
A Series of Incidents on the Eastern Flank
This latest episode adds to an already long list of violations recorded in recent weeks in Romanian airspace.
Last Thursday, two Spanish F-18s had already taken off from the Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base after a flying object was detected near the river border with Ukraine—it was a drone that remained in Romanian airspace for about 12 minutes before returning to Ukrainian territory, prompting authorities to send out an SMS alert to residents of Tulcea County.
A day later, whenthe drone crashed in Romania after flying through the country’s airspace at a very low altitude without being detected by radar, tensions spread to the Baltic region, where allied fighter jets shot down another drone over Latvian territory.
Earlier this month, another unidentified droneexploded in Bulgarian airspacenear the border with Romania after entering from Romanian territory.
