Mirra Andreeva was eliminated from Wimbledon in the second round

Russia's top female tennis player, Mirra Andreeva, was seeded fifth at Wimbledon, even though many considered her one of the contenders for the women's singles title.

In the second round, Andreeva lost a tough match to Barbora Krejčíková, the 2024 champion of this tournament. However, after that victory (which was, in many ways, quite unexpected), the Czech player was plagued by injuries and setbacks, which is why she wasn’t even seeded at this year’s Wimbledon.

In this context, Mirra Andreeva’s defeat was one of the biggest surprises in the women’s draw.

Krejčíková’s experience proved decisive

The Russian won the first set 6–4, and nothing foreshadowed an upset. However, Barbora Krejčíková managed to turn the match around and secured the victory—4–6, 7–5, 6–4. The match lasted nearly three hours and was a tense battle on Center Court. Suffice it to say that in the third set, Mirra Andreeva saved six match points against Krejčíková. But she was ultimately unable to turn the tide and secure the victory.

For Andreeva, this year’s Wimbledon ended much earlier than expected. After her victory at Roland Garros, the Russian tennis player was considered one of the title contenders and hoped to compete for a rare double—winning two Grand Slam tournaments in a row on different surfaces.

After the match, the 19-year-old athlete admitted that she was taking the loss hard and would need a few days to recover emotionally. She said she understood that she could have played better at key moments of the match.

The victory allowed Krejčíková to advance to the third round of Wimbledon, where she will face her compatriot Nikola Bartunková.
