The main topics discussed were attracting investment to expand forest areas, protect rivers and restore degraded ecosystems.

The Minister met with Diego Mesa Puyo, Director-General and President of the Global Environment Facility (GEF); Ivana Živković, Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe; and Raimund Jele, FAO representative in our region.

During the discussions, new funding opportunities were explored for expanding forest cover, protecting rivers and restoring degraded ecosystems. The priority is to increase the country’s forest cover and expand protected natural areas; to achieve this, it is necessary to attract investment and ensure the active participation of local communities.

“For the Republic of Moldova, biodiversity conservation and European integration are inextricably linked. We want to translate national objectives into actions that will benefit both nature and people,” the Minister emphasised during a meeting with the Director-General and the President of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

During the meeting with a representative of the UNDP, opportunities for securing new funding to protect natural areas and restore degraded ecosystems were discussed. At the same time, the importance of expanding existing cooperation was highlighted, including through joint projects dedicated to the conservation of wetlands in the Prut River basin and the sustainable management of the Dniester River.

During discussions with the FAO representative, particular attention was paid to combating soil degradation and restoring forest areas. In this context, the process of collecting data on soil conditions, which began in September in the Orhei and Rezina districts, was highlighted, as was the development of plans to protect agricultural land in 32 settlements across the three districts.

“Our aim is to combat soil degradation and protect the Republic of Moldova’s most valuable resource – our land,” the Minister stated.
