French museums are being robbed again

Following the high-profile Louvre heist, French museums have once again come under attack. On the morning of 8 September, four paintings were stolen from the Auguste Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer. The estimated value of the stolen items is around €9 million.

The alarm went off at 5.48 am. Five minutes later, municipal police officers arrived at the scene, according to L’Orient Le Jour. Two suspects were spotted on the city’s CCTV cameras before they fled. During their escape, they discarded one of the stolen paintings. Three other works – ‘Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano’, ‘Coco Lizan’ and ‘Girl by the Well’ – have not yet been found. An investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for the theft.

The museum’s collection includes 13 paintings by Renoir, as well as works by Aristide Maillol, Pierre Bonnard, Raoul Dufy and other artists.

The museum itself is situated on the Les Collettes estate, which the artist purchased in 1907. Here he built a villa with two studios and spent the final years of his life. His guests included Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani and Claude Monet.

Renoir died in 1919. In 1960, his former home was opened to the public as a museum.

The robbery took place less than a year after the heist at the Louvre in October 2025. On that occasion, the criminals stole nine items from the imperial collection, including jewellery associated with Napoleon and Josephine.
