The meeting was initiated by Forța Fermierilor. According to the organization’s statement on the occasion, the meeting with the Head of State “is part of a special round of dialogue with the authorities to find solutions to save micro, small and medium-sized farms in the grain and oilseed sectors in the face of the recent sharp rise in resource prices and the serious consequences of natural disasters over the last five years.
In a private conversation with Logos Press, a representative of the Forța Fermierilor administration said that he “does not expect any great actual progress in the current crisis situation after the dialog in the Presidency.” However, neither are there any serious reasons for the head of state to refuse an active farmers’ organization an audience.
According to a rough estimate of Forța Fermierilor, about 30% of agricultural producers, who make up the social base of the organization, are in a state of technical bankruptcy. Another about 30-35% of farmers – actual members and sympathizers of the association – are in a difficult (and most importantly, deteriorating) economic situation. And only one third of farmers of this social stratum “more or less cope with the challenges” – that is, continue to solve current problems and invest in future development.
