For the first time in Moldova, solar energy has become the main renewable energy source

Moldova took an important step towards energy independence in the first quarter of 2026, when domestic electricity production covered about 52% of national consumption.

This is one of the most significant developments in the energy sector in recent years, according to data released by the National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE).

Between January and March, local producers produced 646.2 million kWh of electricity. Meanwhile, renewable sources are playing an increasingly important role, providing 253.3 million kWh, representing almost 39% of domestic production and about 20% of the energy supplied to end consumers.

The first achievement highlighted by ANRE is the growth in solar energy production. For the first time, photovoltaic installations surpassed wind farms in terms of renewable energy. Solar energy accounted for 58% of the total green energy production – 146.5 million kWh, while wind farms generated only 95.5 million kWh.

The increase in local production also contributed to a decrease in import dependency. Moldova imported 741.2 million kWh of electricity in the first quarter, down 6.8% from the same period last year. Romania remained the main external supplier, but the share of energy imported from across the Prut decreased to 52.4% of total purchases.

On the other hand, energy consumption continued to grow. End-users used approximately 1.24 billion kWh, almost 80 million kWh more than in the first three months of 2025. The increase is attributed to the low temperatures in the current winter and the consequent increase in consumption in both households and the economic sector.
