Anatolie Nosatîi: Defending our airspace requires time and significant expenditure

Airspace defence is one of the Republic of Moldova’s priorities in the context of the war in Ukraine, but developing an air defence system is a costly and time-consuming process, according to Defence Minister Anatolie Nosatîi. He spoke about the main security challenges and cooperation with strategic partners in an interview with the Platform for Security and Defence Initiatives (PISA), on the sidelines of the Security Forum.

According to the minister, the incidents in the Republic of Moldova’s airspace have brought to the fore the issue of the country’s ability to protect its airspace.

“The incidents in our airspace have brought to the fore the question of just how well the Republic of Moldova can defend its airspace. Air defence is a highly complex and very costly set of measures that cannot be built up in a short period of time, particularly as it is a priority for countries at war, such as Ukraine, but also for all neighbouring countries. “The Republic of Moldova shares the longest border with Ukraine, which is at war – a border stretching 1,212 km – and, consequently, due to the repercussions of this war and, in some cases, deliberate attacks by the Russian Federation, the defence of our airspace is a priority for us,” Nosatîi stated.

In this context, Nosatîi maintains that the security of the Republic of Moldova cannot be analysed in isolation from developments in the region.

“At present, when we talk about the security of a state – regardless of its relative size – we must take into account all the related processes in the region. So, when we talk about the security of the Republic of Moldova, this security undoubtedly extends to the wider Black Sea basin, including the European Union,” said the minister.

To address these risks and to accelerate the modernisation of the National Army, the Republic of Moldova is expanding its cooperation with strategic partners. Nosatîi states that the pace of the army’s transformation must be accelerated due to the security situation in the region:

“Undoubtedly, bilateral cooperation with our strategic partners is of major importance to us, as we cannot tackle the challenges and threats we face on our own, nor can we achieve the objectives of modernising and transforming the National Army that we have set ourselves within a very ambitious and tight timeframe; whilst we do not have the time to carry this out in accordance with the principles of military science, the fact that we are in a tense region, facing various dangers and threats, compels us to hasten this process.”
