UVM is a standard unit of measurement that allows different categories of animals to be combined into a single indicator, making it easier to compare them in the context of support (subsidy) measures for the livestock sector.
The UVM calculator helps farmers calculate the standardized amount of farm support under the PSPA. Specifically:
- total income support—“per kilogram of milk”—from cattle, sheep, and goats;
- total income support—“per head”—for young cattle, sheep, and goats, as well as for horses;
- construction or modernization of livestock farms.
Within the framework of these support measures, the UVM indicator is used to assess and monitor the following objectives: feasibility, competitiveness, environmental performance, reduction of emissions from livestock production, animal welfare, and other outcomes of livestock operations as outlined in the PSPA program.
