A Subjective Ranking of Safety in European Countries

The popular website Numbeo has ranked Moldova eighth from the bottom in its list of the safest countries in Europe. One spot below is Sweden (presumably experiencing problems with crime due to an influx of not-so-peaceful migrants). One spot above is Greece. Above it is “more peaceful” Turkey.

Of course, a person’s subjective sense of safety does not always correspond to official crime statistics. It is influenced by factors such as street lighting, infrastructure, crime reporting, and the visible presence of law enforcement. In the aforementioned Numbeo ranking, war-torn Russia ranked higher than Moldova, while relatively neutral Belarus fell to near the bottom of the list.

And at the very bottom is France, with a subjective safety index of 35.23. The countries with the lowest levels of subjective safety also include Belgium (40.79), the United Kingdom (41.71), Ireland (42.23), and the aforementioned Belarus (42.87).

According to Numbeo, the country where residents feel safest during nighttime walks is Croatia (75.93). The countries with the highest levels of subjective safety also included Slovenia (73.74), Iceland (71.55), Montenegro (70.46), and Estonia (69.69).
