Christine Lagarde
She made this statement in an interview with the Belgian newspaper Les Echos. Ms. Lagarde noted that her term expires in October 2027. According to her, “the captain must remain on board” during a turbulent period in the economy. However, she did not rule out the possibility of stepping down early if the situation in the EU stabilizes.
In that case, Christine Lagarde could turn her attention to European politics. “I believe that the voices of European politicians should be heard in the French presidential debates,” she said.
The Financial Times reported in February on Christine Lagarde’s plans to step down early as head of the ECB. The newspaper’s sources claimed that the ECB president intends to do so before the French presidential election in April 2027: this would allow French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to approve a new candidate. Ms. Lagarde herself has denied this report.
