“In my view, there are plenty of opportunities to set agriculture aside and allow Ukraine to leverage its competitive advantages in the agricultural sector in its relations with third countries, without participating in the EU’s subsidy system, and then see how the situation develops over the next few years,” ukragroconsult quotes the ambassador as saying.
At the same time, Maternova added that if Ukraine joins the EU, there will be no concessions regarding the fulfillment of fundamental membership criteria, particularly in the areas of the rule of law, a market economy, statistics, and financial control.
“I think that in all other respects, both sides need to find a way to build the European home of the future. I mean, this isn’t necessarily Brussels’ position. This is what I think, living in this country: I believe that our futures are closely intertwined, and this will also be a strategic step, a choice, and at the same time a dilemma for Europe—how to relate to a country that is not merely a recipient,” the ambassador noted.
