“From the first day of the barbaric war against Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, our people have shown solidarity. We, the state institutions, have provided all the necessary political, diplomatic and humanitarian support to the Ukrainian refugees. Since the beginning of the war, more than 1,830,000 people have crossed the border of the Republic of Moldova and today there are more than 140,000 refugees in the country. These are mostly women and children who enjoy access to education, medicine and social protection. We are happy to see that these women and their children are integrating very well into our communities,” Doina German said at a briefing on Thursday, June 4.
According to UNHCR data, currently among refugees in Moldova, 39% are women, 40% are children and 21% are men. Elderly people make up about 13% and persons with disabilities about 19% of the total number of refugees.
More than 86,500 people have been granted temporary protection status, which guarantees them legal stay, the right to work, access to education and primary health care until March 2027.
The largest number of temporary protection beneficiaries is in the municipality of Chisinau (56,428 persons). Other regions with a significant number of beneficiaries include: administrative-territorial units from the left bank of the Nistru River (6,472), ATU Gagauzia (5,122), Balti municipality (3,659), Ocnita district (3,072) and Cahul municipality (2,295).
Between 2022 and 2025, more than $785 million has been allocated for the management of the refugee situation in the Republic of Moldova. In 2026, UNHCR has launched an appeal to raise $144 million to support 480,000 refugees in ten countries. The response plan for the Republic of Moldova includes a request of $116 million to assist 75,600 refugees and 34,400 members of host communities.
