The unemployment rate has risen catastrophically as a result of the recalculations

The unemployment rate in the first quarter at the national level amounted to 10.4% against the previously declared 3-4%, calculated according to the ILO methodology. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) cited the data, arguing that the new figures are based on the transition of the agency from 2026 to the labor force survey instruments according to the standards of the European Union.

According to the NBS, the number of unemployed in Moldova aged 15-74 years old, as estimated by the International Labor Organization (ILO), was 93.6 thousand people. Unemployment mostly affected men, who accounted for 58.2% of the total number of unemployed, and people living in rural areas – 61.9%.

The unemployment rate among men amounted to 11.9%, among women – 8.8%, in urban areas – 7.6%, and in rural areas – 13.4%.

By age groups, the highest unemployment rate was recorded among young people aged 15-24 (22.8%).

The official statistics, according to the new methodology of calculation, included in the number of unemployed, as explained by the NBS, persons who previously belonged to other categories of inactive or partially employed citizens. For example, seasonal workers and labor migrants waiting to go abroad for work.
