According to the presidency’s statement, “this step marks an important stage in the European integration path of both countries and sends a strong signal of unity and determination on the part of the European Union.”

“On behalf of the European Union Member States, we would like to inform that after assessing the fulfillment of the criteria for the opening of the 1st cluster – “Fundamental Principles”, the European Union considers that the Republic of Moldova is now sufficiently prepared to start negotiations within this cluster. In this respect, it is proposed to present Moldova’s position at the Accession Conference for the official opening of this cluster,” the message, signed by Ambassador Cristina Rafti, chairperson of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER), reads.
According to the Presidency’s press release, “intensive work will continue in the coming days to finalize the discussions within the EU Council in order to officially open this cluster”.
“The Cypriot Presidency, guided by the principle of meritocracy and performance-based assessment, is fulfilling its commitments in the field of enlargement, which is a strategic priority and one of the most significant transformational policies of the European Union,” the letter said.
Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gerasimov said that “this is an important signal that enlargement remains a strategic priority for the European Union and that Moldova continues to enjoy support on its European path”.
“For us, this moment means the continuation of the work started at home: reforms, harmonization of the legislation with the European standards and preparations for the official opening of all negotiation clusters,” Gerasimov said.
