The MAIA Ministry, through the Agricultural Interventions and Payments Agency (AIPA), supports producers in the livestock sector through direct payments “per kilogram of milk” (delivered to dairies) and payments “per head of animal”.

In 2025, 83.81 million lei in subsidies were paid from the National Fund for Support of Agricultural Producers and Rural Areas to 183 producers of cow milk, 0.94 million lei to 8 producers of sheep milk and 1.81 million lei to 8 producers of goat milk.

Also last year, cattle breeders received significant payments from the state budgetary fund “per head of animal”. Thus, for cattle, 130 beneficiaries received subsidies amounting to 11.99 million lei. For sheep, 212 beneficiaries received 38.5 million lei, while for goats, 15.2 million lei was given to 139 livestock breeders.

Last year, Moldova’s milk production on authorized (by ANSA agency) livestock farms “increased to 64 thousand tons, compared to 52.3 thousand tons in 2024. For the first 3 months of 2026, the available data indicate a production of 16.6 thousand tons of milk on livestock farms,” MAIA said.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics of RM, in 2025, 282.5 thousand tons of milk will be produced in farms of all categories (+5.7% to the corresponding figure for 2024). At the same time, agricultural enterprises produced 66.1 thousand tons of milk (+21.7%), households – 216.4 thousand tons (+1.7%). In the first quarter of 2026 milk production in Moldova amounted to 51,9 thousand tons – remained at the level of the last year. At the same time, agricultural enterprises produced 26.7% more milk than in the same period last year, while in household farms it decreased by 9.1% (to 35.2 thousand tons).

World Milk Day is celebrated annually on June 1 and commemorates the role of milk in the diet of the population, as well as the work of farmers in this sector. The event was established in 2001 at the suggestion of FAO/UN. Symbolically, the event is celebrated at the same time as the International Children’s Day. Also, since 2000, on the proposal of the same organization, School Milk Day has been celebrated annually on the last Wednesday of September.
