
According to DW with reference to the U.S. Secret Service, in the evening of May 23, a man with a bag approached the fence of the White House. According to the agency, shortly after six o’clock in the evening local time, he pulled a gun from the bag and opened fire on security personnel. The Secret Service officers returned fire, wounding the assailant.
The man was taken to the hospital, where doctors later pronounced him dead. The identity of the shooter has not been officially released. The agency said the investigation is ongoing and more information will be released at a later date.
A passerby who was nearby was also injured in the shooting. His condition has not yet been reported. There were no injuries among the Secret Service personnel.
The moment the shooting began was partially captured live on ABC television. Correspondent Selina Van at this moment was reporting from the White House grounds. According to her, there were “several dozen shots”, after which journalists were ordered to take cover in the building.
