“The health of the population is inextricably linked to the quality of the environment in which we live” – Emil Cheban

People's health directly depends on the state of the environment, which is why Moldova needs to implement measures to mitigate the impact of climate change on people. This was stated by Health Minister Emil Ceban in Geneva, where a Moldovan delegation is participating in the 79th session of the World Health Assembly, a key WHO global forum to define the future of world medicine.

The minister said that for Moldova, the participation in the assembly is an opportunity to strengthen the dialog with international partners, to express the priorities of the national healthcare system and to adapt the current reforms to the global trends.

On the first day of the session, the head of the Health Ministry participated in the launch of the Pan-European Commission on Climate and Health’s Call to Action. Speaking at the panel discussion, Emil Ceban emphasized that in order to effectively respond to environmental challenges, it is crucial to promote special protective policies and involve a wide range of economic sectors in this work.

On the margins of the forum, the minister has already held a number of important meetings with the WHO leadership – the organization’s Director General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and the Director of the WHO Regional Office for Europe, Dr. Hans Henri P. Kluge. The sides discussed the support needed by Moldova for the implementation of medical reforms and the strengthening of further cooperation.

In the next few days, the assembly’s work will continue at plenary sessions. The Moldovan delegation is also scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings with international partners and colleagues from other countries, aimed at attracting new resources and experience for the development of the Moldovan healthcare system.
