This was reported in social networks by Gagauz public figures in Ukraine. They note that by doing so, the issue of settling the legal status of the Gagauz ethnos in Ukraine has moved to a practical plane. And they remind that according to the law “On Indigenous Peoples of Ukraine” (No. 1616-IX of 01.07.2021), Crimean Tatars, Karaites and Krymchaks have this status.
During the adoption of this Law in the summer of 2021, some deputies stated that the Gagauz should be included in the list of indigenous peoples of Ukraine by amending the new legislation. But nothing was done for this during five years.
And now such a bill has appeared. The explanatory note to the document says that “the purpose of the bill is to legalize the status of the Gagauz as indigenous peoples in Ukraine in order to preserve their cultural, linguistic, educational rights, as well as to create tools for preserving their identity as a people”.
