This was reported by the National Bank of Moldova (NBM), which provided supporting evidence and highlighted the benefits of the national payment system introduced two years ago—initially for payments from individuals to businesses, and a year later, to the government.
Users can make payments to businesses, as well as receive transfers or payment requests on their phone number. Payments are simple and fast: by scanning a QR code, clicking on a payment link, or accepting a payment request directly in the customer’s banking app.
Transfers via phone number between accounts at different banks take just a few seconds and are available 24/7. There’s no need to know long bank details or an IBAN—simply use the recipient’s phone number from your contacts.
Transfers totaling up to 10,000 lei per month are completely free of charge (0%), and for amounts above this limit, the fee does not exceed 5 lei. Transactions can be made anywhere and anytime, and funds are credited to the account in just 10 seconds.
Over the past two years, more than 11,000 entrepreneurs have integrated MIA into their daily operations, and this solution is now available at more than 23,000 service locations nationwide.
Through the MIA instant payment system, more than 3.8 million payments have been made to support the business community, totaling approximately 2 billion lei.
Instant Payments for Government Services
In the first year since its official launch (in 2025), citizens made more than 113,000 payments to the government through the system, totaling more than 64 million lei.
The P2G functionality in the MIA instant payment system allows citizens to pay taxes, fines, and government services on the EVO and MPay government platforms directly from their financial app, without manually entering card or payment information. Payments are processed instantly, and the service is available without interruption.
Each month, approximately 2 million transactions to the government totaling about 2 billion lei are processed through the MIA system. Since its launch, the system has processed over 31 million transactions totaling approximately 28.5 billion lei.
MIA Instant Payments continues to evolve by introducing new features and expanding the use cases for instant payments, including through the implementation of business-to-business (B2B) transfers: MIA-B2B.
