Incineration is not an effective solution because textiles have a low calorific value and a high chlorine content, which affects the operation of incineration plants. On the other hand, reusing and donating clothing in good condition remain the most accessible options for reducing waste.
The issue takes on particular significance given that the European Union has imposed a ban on the destruction of unsold clothing, footwear, and accessories, effective July 19, 2026. This measure aims to reduce waste and minimize the textile industry’s environmental impact, while also changing how large companies manage their inventory.
This ban does not yet have a direct impact on Moldova, but it may become relevant as the country moves toward accession to the European Union and harmonizes its national legislation with European standards.
