Vasile Tofan
Today, Tofan held another round of consultations. He met with representatives of local government. The discussions focused on administrative-territorial reform and the further development of local communities.
“Today we spoke frankly with representatives of local government about our communities and the reform. What should the structure of the first level be—the organization of city halls, their funding, and self-government—and what is the role of the second level—district councils? These are complex issues, and opinions were divided, but it’s good that there is discussion,” said the candidate for prime minister, who spoke in favor of working together to find solutions.
The reform that has been launched is not uniting society
“We expressed our concern that the reform currently underway is not uniting society but dividing it, and this could negatively impact Moldova’s image in the context of European integration and the negotiations,” commented Viorel Furdui, executive director of the Congress of Local Authorities (CALM), on the meeting’s outcome.
Therefore, the organization’s members called on the government to extend the deadline for the voluntary amalgamation process in order to ease the accumulated tension in society. They also presented their proposals on decentralization, including financial decentralization, and offered comments on the proposed changes to tax policy for next year.
Vasile Tofan emphasized the need for reasoned discussions and the search for constructive solutions.
“I thank the representatives of CALM, CALE, and the Union of District Councils for their active participation,” Tofan noted. “Many communities have already made progress in the voluntary amalgamation process and have begun to cooperate. Mayors need resources and capacity for development. Therefore, the right decision is not to dismantle what has already been built, but to propose solutions based on actual local conditions—especially since it is already July, and we cannot afford to waste time on delays or roadblocks.”
