Wind and solar have overtaken gas in generating electricity globally

In April 2026, wind and solar power surpassed natural gas in global electricity generation for the first time. Global wind and solar power generation increased by 13% year-on-year to a record 22% of global electricity generation, while natural gas power plants accounted for around 20%. Wind and solar power plants produced a combined 531 TWh of electricity in April, compared to 477 TWh of generation from natural gas.

Growth was particularly strong in China (+14%), the European Union (+13%), the UK (+35%), the US (+8%), Australia (+17%), Chile (+24%) and Brazil (+4%).

The data is based on information provided by 36 countries, taking into account conservative estimates for those countries that have not yet published their April figures. The achievement was made possible by a record expansion of renewable energy capacity (RES) and falling prices for solar panels. This is reported by the British analytical center Ember.

Ember analysts emphasize that this trend is part of a broader trend and not a consequence of the sharp rise in fossil fuel prices caused by the conflict with Iran. They also note that the development of wind and solar energy contributes to reducing dependence on gas imports for many countries.

Kostanta Rangelova, global electricity analyst at Ember, said that “the current energy crisis has increased the economic attractiveness of renewables and heightened the political need to accelerate their deployment.”

It is important to note that, contrary to experts’ fears, the rise in gas prices has not led to a massive return of countries to burning dirty coal – its share in the world has remained stable or decreased due to substitution by renewable sources.

Moldovan “greening”

In Moldova, the share of renewable energy sources (RES) in electricity consumption has reached 24.5% by the end of 2025. According to the current data of the National Center for Sustainable Energy (CNED) for spring 2026, the country is experiencing a real boom in green generation: 1,039.74 MW is the total installed RES capacity in the country at the end of the first quarter of 2026 (the 1 GW threshold was officially surpassed).

Last summer (August 23), Moldova recorded a historical record when, at noon, the country’s domestic electricity consumption was fully covered by local renewable sources.
