As Logos Press previously reported, under the draft budget and tax policy for 2027, the first 100 kW·h of electricity consumed in the energy sector will be exempt from VAT, an 8% rate will apply to the first 150 cubic meters of gas, and for consumption exceeding these thresholds, citizens will pay the base rate of 20%. Heat energy will continue to be subject to a zero VAT rate.
In other words, it was initially planned that the VAT rate increase would apply to consumption exceeding 150 cubic meters of natural gas and more than 100 kWh of electricity.
Now, Jungietu notes that the authorities are considering changing the taxation mechanism for consumption volumes exceeding the established limits. However, he also emphasizes that Moldova is the only country in Europe where VAT does not apply to energy resources, with the exception of the 8% paid on consumed gas.
It is worth mentioning that earlier, Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, while presenting the tax policy for 2027, noted that starting April 1, a 20% VAT in the energy sector would apply to consumption exceeding the established thresholds.
