Universities and research institutes in Moldova have secured €2.75 million through Horizon Europe over five years

Research institutions and universities in the Republic of Moldova have secured €2.75 million through the European Horizon Europe programme for the period 2021–2026. The Minister for Education and Research, Dan Perciun, says that institutions in the country need to make greater efforts to capitalise on European funding opportunities.

“We are making an annual investment of around 30 million euros across our entire research system. Our capacity to attract funding through Horizon Europe, which has a budget running into the billions, stood at 2.75 million euros. As I always like to point out, the General Inspectorate of Border Police attracts more funding from Horizon Europe than all our research institutions and universities put together,” said Dan Perciun.

Between 2021 and 2026, the Republic of Moldova submitted 216 projects under the programme, of which approximately 26 secured funding. The success rate was 11.1 per cent, according to the minister.

“We must acknowledge that there has been an acceleration recently. This is particularly evident at UTN, but there is still work to be done in this area. We attach great importance to this,” the minister added.

Horizon Europe is the European Union’s ambitious framework programme for research and innovation for the period 2021–2027, with a budget of 95.5 billion euros.
