This was reported by the Belarusian news agency BELTA, citing *The Wall Street Journal* (WSJ).
The WSJ article states that, in addition to withdrawing the brigade combat team from Romania and refusing to send a brigade for rotation to Poland, Hegset wanted to propose further reductions in U.S. forces in Europe.
The plan was rejected following a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and several other high-ranking officials. Instead, Hegset announced a review of the structure of U.S. military deployments in Europe.
The U.S. administration is divided on the question of the pace and extent to which troop levels in European countries can be reduced, the WSJ notes. In addition, U.S. lawmakers, including key Republicans, fear that further reductions in the military presence would harm the alliance.
Hegset had previously stated that the U.S. plans to change the structure of its military deployments worldwide to adapt them to current missions.
