The walnut harvest in Moldova will begin earlier than usual

The hot weather in August will bring forward the start of the mass harvest of early-ripening walnut varieties bred in Moldova (“Peschansky,” “Kazaku,” and others) by about a week. It is tentatively scheduled to begin in early September. Just a few years ago, the walnut harvest in commercial orchards began in the second half of the first month of fall.

If precipitation falls in the second half of August, it will benefit walnut growers: the moisture will help the green husks of the walnuts crack open quickly and easily, which will speed up and simplify the harvest.

According to preliminary estimates by experts from the Association of Walnut Growers of the Republic of Moldova, the condition of the walnut orchards is satisfactory, and the 206 harvest is expected to be at least as good as last year’s.
