OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Teens with Enhanced Safety Features

OpenAI has introduced a special version of ChatGPT for teenagers—ChatGPT for Teens—which includes enhanced safety features, parental controls, and educational tools. The new version is automatically activated if the system determines that the user is under 18, or if the user specifies that they are between 13 and 17 years old.

According to Reuters, the launch comes amid growing criticism of the risks associated with minors’ use of AI chatbots, as well as legal proceedings in which OpenAI is facing allegations of potential harm to children.

Parents will be able to restrict the use of ChatGPT

The new version includes the ability to link teens’ and parents’ accounts. Parents will be able to manage specific settings and set so-called “Quiet Hours”—periods during which use of the service is restricted.

OpenAI has also expanded its notification system for parents in situations the company classifies as high-risk. Specifically, Reuters reports on new notifications related to signs of eating disorders.

Thus, the company is shifting from a one-size-fits-all model for chatbot use to a more specialized approach, in which the user’s age influences the available features and the level of protective measures.

Focus on Learning, Not Task Completion

ChatGPT for Teens will also feature a set of educational tools. These include a step-by-step guided learning mode, reminders designed to limit the chatbot’s use as a way to avoid doing schoolwork independently, as well as quizzes and visualization tools to reinforce learning.

In addition, users will be able to set specific study times.

OpenAI stated that the new version is designed to help expand educational opportunities for teens and support them in situations where necessary assistance is unavailable, while maintaining active user participation in the learning process.

The AI Market Strengthens Protection for Minors

The launch of a special version of ChatGPT reflects a broader issue facing the generative AI market. As chatbots become more like human conversation partners, some users are beginning to turn to them not only for information but also for emotional support.

Experts cited by Reuters warn of the risks of excessive dependence on automated systems, especially regarding issues related to users’ mental health and well-being.

At the same time, the families of some people who died after interacting with chatbots have criticized the lack of safeguards.

For the AI market, this means that competition among developers will increasingly depend not only on the quality of models and the number of new features. Safety mechanisms, age restrictions, parental controls, and companies’ ability to mitigate risks when minors use AI are becoming important factors.
