The additional annual expenses for these changes are estimated at about 10.4 million lei. These provisions are contained in a draft government decision, which is aimed at reorganizing the institution and adapting its structure to the new responsibilities assumed. The draft is on the agenda of the cabinet meeting of 20 May.
The draft provides for an internal reorganization of the ministry, including the creation of new subdivisions. Among them are a unit dedicated to tourism development and a new directorate for policies in the digital economy, artificial intelligence and technological innovation.
At the same time, the number of state secretaries will increase from four to five, and several existing directorates will be expanded with more staff and managerial positions.
In the context of the transfer of the tourism sector to the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization, it will also become the founder of the public institution “National Tourism Office”. Until now, this function has been performed by the Ministry of Culture.
The authors of the project explain that the tasks for the implementation of EU laws in the areas of the Ministry of Economy should be largely accomplished already during 2026. Given the substantial volume of European norms, the short timeframe and the current staff limit, the ministry needs to urgently expand its structure.
