To do so, they will have to pay a higher fixed annual contribution rate to the National Social Insurance Fund. The procedure requires submitting a written application to a branch of the National Social Insurance Fund.

The law establishing the principle of equal treatment for self-employed men and women was drafted by the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection.

As Logos Press previously reported, it transposes into Moldovan law an EU directive that provides self-employed individuals with the option, if they so choose, to receive all social insurance benefits, including maternity benefits.

In addition, they will be eligible for temporary disability benefits, maternity benefits, child care benefits, paternity benefits, and lump-sum payments in the event of adoption. The wives of self-employed workers will also be eligible to receive maternity benefits.

According to the State Tax Service, in 2024 there were 50,879 self-employed workers registered who paid contributions to the social insurance fund.

Currently, these individuals receive only an old-age pension and a death benefit. The new legislative provisions will take effect on January 1, 2027.
