The number of electric vehicles in Moldova is set to double by 2030

There are currently about 11,000 electric vehicles and more than 81,500 hybrid vehicles, including plug-in hybrids, in the Republic of Moldova. If current growth rates continue, the number of electric vehicles in use in our country could double by 2030. Therefore, it is necessary to accelerate efforts to develop the infrastructure.

This is stated in a study on the current state and future prospects of the charging station infrastructure for electric vehicles in public and private transport. The study was presented on June 9 at the Ministry of Energy.

The study was conducted in partnership with the National Center for Sustainable Energy and the Ministry of Energy as part of a UNDP project in Moldova funded by the Danish government, according to a press release from the Ministry of Energy.

Ahead of Schedule

State Secretary Carolina Novak stated that the Republic of Moldova is ahead of schedule in achieving one of the goals set out in the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), — 11,000 electric vehicles by 2030. She also highlighted another target that must be achieved: a 6.9% share of renewable energy in transportation by 2030.

The Secretary of State highlighted the programs implemented by the Ministry of Energy to support the electrification of the economy, including funding for electric vehicle charging stations under the “Green House” program.

“Even if we have not utilized the funds allocated prior to EU accession to support the electrification of transport, we will focus on developing charging infrastructure, at least along major highways,” said Karolina Novak.

She confirmed that the ministry will continue to promote electrification policies, both regarding the transposition of European standards and regarding digitalization and the development of physical infrastructure.

Progress has been made, but there are not enough charging stations

The study provides a comprehensive assessment of the current situation, future needs, investments, regulatory aspects, and implementation options. It also serves as a roadmap for infrastructure development through 2030 and provides a reliable database for future policy and investment decisions.

The findings show that the Republic of Moldova has already made significant progress in the development of electromobility. At the same time, the network of charging stations remains unevenly distributed and insufficient to cope with the expected increase in the number of electric vehicles.

The authors propose a practical path for developing a network of modern, accessible, and future-proof charging stations that will contribute to achieving Moldova’s climate and energy goals, strengthen compliance with European standards, and improve the quality of life for its residents. The transport sector generates about a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions in the country.

The data and development prospects presented in the study were analyzed by experts from the Republic of Moldova, Germany, Poland, and Romania.
