These are the provisions of the EU Directive on an adequate minimum wage, which have been transposed into Moldovan law and have entered into force.
To assess the adequacy of the minimum wage, the benchmark used will be an amount equal to 50% of the average monthly wage in the economy, as projected for the year preceding the year for which the minimum wage is set.
At the same time, this figure serves as a tool for assessing the adequacy of the minimum wage and is not an automatic mechanism for setting its amount.
The process of harmonization with EU standards has necessitated changes to a number of Moldovan regulatory acts. The Law on the Procedure for Establishing and Revising the Minimum Wage and the Law on Wages are being revised.
These adjustments will ensure the protection of workers’ rights through a more equitable minimum wage that reflects the cost of living and reduces poverty.
The minimum monthly wage, as well as the hourly wage calculated based on the monthly standard working hours, are set and revised by government decision following consultations with employers and labor unions.
Their amounts will be determined based on economic conditions and the average wage level in the national economy, as well as the projected inflation rate.
