This is reported by RBC with reference to El Pais, which published the text of the court decision. The singer was accused that in 2011, Shakira should have been a tax resident of Spain and did not pay taxes on her income from 120 concerts held as part of a world tour.
In order to be considered a Spanish tax resident Shakira had to spend 183 days in Spain. The defense proved that the singer was not in Spain for the minimum period.
The artist after the announcement of the court’s decision stated that for more than eight years she faced public condemnation and pressure, which affected her health and the well-being of her family.
The verdict of the Spanish National Court is not final. The tax authorities may appeal and appeal the decision to the Supreme Court.
In 2022, the prosecutor’s office in Barcelona requested 8 years and two months in prison for Shakira in the case of non-payment of taxes on € 14.5 million. The singer compensated for the damage together with interest totaling € 23.7 million, which the authorities demanded.
In November 2023, the court found Shakira guilty in the case, but commuted the prison sentence to a €432,000 fine.
