This opinion of Ukrainian expert Oleksiy Fomenko is quoted by EastFruit portal. According to his observations, many Ukrainian farms do not pay sufficient attention to accounting for product losses, although this indicator significantly affects the economic efficiency of business. In European countries, losses at the level of 3-4% are usually taken into account in financial planning. In Ukraine, however, the real losses are often higher due to the peculiarities of manual harvesting, insufficient level of product cooling and unstable demand in the market.
Oleksiy Fomenko emphasizes that each lost percentage of the berry harvest means not only lost revenue, but also wasted resources for picking, sorting, packing, transportation and labor. Therefore, the introduction of systematic accounting of losses and constant control of product quality can become one of the most effective tools for increasing the profitability of berry production.
Remark Logos Press: The opinion is relevant all the more so because the “berry” regions of Ukraine and Moldova have been hit by a wave of heavy precipitation. They, firstly, significantly complicate the process of harvesting and sorting, and secondly – provoke the development of diseases. In such cases, experts recommend preventive treatment of strawberry plantations with copper-containing preparations in combination with anti-stressants.
