The head of state confirmed that, according to the formula proposed by the Ministry of Finance, her official salary could increase from approximately 21,000 lei to 65,000 lei (before taxes).
“This is the gross salary—the formula proposed by the Ministry of Finance. Well, we can discuss this. Today, a department head at any institution earns more than the president, the speaker of parliament, or the prime minister. I believe this is wrong. This was the experts’ proposal regarding the hierarchy—how the Salary Law should look. As far as I understand, the Ministry of Finance is currently holding consultations, and we need to wait for them to conclude,” Maia Sandu stated on ProTV Chișinău.
According to the president, the reform was developed by a group of experts brought in by the World Bank. They assessed public sector positions based on their complexity, required competencies, and level of responsibility.
She also emphasized that discussions are ongoing, as “every sector wants more”: “And yes, the salaries of top government officials have also been adjusted. We discussed this issue,” the president clarified.
At the same time, Maia Sandu categorically denied reports that ministers’ salaries would also increase: “I don’t think so, since ministers’ salaries were raised quite recently.”
As for members of parliament, their base salaries will increase, but the current allowances will be eliminated.
“This law should also provide for wage increases for the rest of the citizens,” the head of state concluded.
