EU leaders head to Mexico

Diversifying trade relations amid global instability and U.S. trade policies will be the main subject of negotiations and the signing of an ambitious free trade and strategic partnership agreement (MGA) to strengthen economic ties. The European Union will be represented at the meeting by European Council President António Costa and European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen.

meeting between Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

A historic breakthrough in EU-Mexico relations is expected this week, May 22. European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will meet with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

The two sides will sign the Modernized Global Agreement (MGA) and the Interim Trade Agreement (iTA), which will replace the outdated cooperation framework that has been in place since 2000. The agreements eliminate almost all remaining customs duties on imports from the EU (especially on agricultural products such as cheese, olive oil and chocolate), which will open up new opportunities for European exporters.

Both Brussels and Mexico City are seeking to reduce economic risks and diversify supply chains in response to the protectionist policies and tariff threats of the Donald Trump administration.

The two sides will also discuss a roadmap for cooperation on fighting organized crime, climate protection, energy security, migration and digitalization. Before his visit to Mexico, European Council President António Costa will pay an official visit to Guatemala on May 20 to express support for democratic reforms in that country.
