The network will cover the whole of Estonia
“This is just the beginning: we are moving towards creating a network covering the whole of Estonia,” Latvian portal delfi.lv quoted the head of the Interior Ministry Igor Taro as saying, citing Deutsche Welle. – Recent drone incidents show that we have realistically assessed the risks when planning our capabilities”.
It is expected that drone monitoring devices will be installed on the remaining sections of the land border by the end of 2026.
Law enforcement officials are now procuring the necessary equipment, and construction work is on track or even ahead of schedule. And in those parts of the border where there are no fixed monitoring devices yet, mobile ones are being used.
Recently, drones have regularly flown into the territory of the Baltic States. For example, on May 19, NATO fighters – Romanian F-16s – shot down a drone in Estonian airspace. According to the country’s Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur, it was the first such incident.
On May 17, NATO planes took to the air in neighboring Latvia because of an unidentified drone. The Latvian Armed Forces said that such cases are possible as long as military operations in Ukraine continue.
On the same day, the downed drone was found in Lithuania, near the borders with Belarus and Latvia. At the same time, representatives of the Lithuanian Armed Forces said that radars had not detected the drone in the sky above the country.
